How to attach a file

You may be asked to attach a file in either an assignment  or a discussion forum

Attaching Files In Forums

After you have typed the text of your forum post:

  1. Click the ‘Choose Files’ button below the text box.

  2. Navigate to your file and click on it.

  3. Then click the ‘Open’ button.

  4. Finally, click the ‘Submit’ button.

Depending on the file size and your internet speed, it may take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes for your file to load. If it is taking longer or you see a constant spinning wheel, then the file may be too large. The upload limit is typically 5 MB. If your file is over 5MB, then consider using smaller image files within the file or split it into two separate documents.

Attaching Files in Assignments

For help, either watch this video or read these instructions.

Start by clicking the ‘Add Submission’ button, then choose one of these two options...

Option 1: Drag and Drop

  1. Drag and drop the file from your computer desktop or file location into the white file drop box labeled ‘drop files here’.

  2. Wait a few seconds for it to finish uploading (max file size is typically 5 MB).

  3. Click the ‘save changes’ button.

  4. Depending on the activity settings you may also need to click the ‘submit assignment’ button on the next screen. If you only see an ‘edit submission’ button and no ‘submit assignment’ - then you have successfully submitted your assignment!

Option 2: Use the ‘Add File’ icon

  1. Click the ‘Add File’ icon that looks like a tiny piece of paper

  2. From the File Picker box that opens, start by selecting ‘Upload a file’ from the menu on the left. (It may already be selected.)

  3. Click the ‘Choose File’ button, find where you saved the file on your computer, and select it.

  4. Then click the ‘Open’ button, followed by the ‘Upload this file’ button.

  5. Wait a few seconds for it to finish uploading (max file size is typically 5 MB).

  6. Click the ‘save changes’ button.

  7. Depending on the activity settings you may also need to click the ‘submit assignment’ button on the next screen. If you only see an ‘edit submission’ button and no ‘submit assignment’ - then you have successfully submitted your assignment!

If your file is taking a long time to load, then it may be too large. Consider using small image files within the document or splitting it into two separate files, then submitting both.

Important: Some assignments will have three sections where you can submit information: Online Text, Comments, and File Submissions. It is important that you use the proper place to submit your work or you may not receive credit.

  • Online Text: This is used when submitting your work in text form. You can type directly into this field or copy and paste in your text from another program. This area is also used when submitting a link to a Google Doc. This can be accessed by going into the assignment > click ‘add submission’. Note: not all assignments will have an online text field.

  • File Submission: This is used when you are asked to attach or upload a file. This can be accessed by going into the assignment > click ‘add submission’. Note: not all assignments will have an option to attach a file.

  • Comments: This should be used when you want to add additional context for your assignment. It should not be used to submit your actual assignment as it will not alert the course facilitator that the assignment has been submitted.  Comments can be found by going into the assignment and clicking on the red arrow next to the Comments link (just above the ‘Add submission’ button). Note: not all assignments will have an option to submit a comment.
